The I-696 “Walter P. Reuther Freeway” carries approximately 150,000 vehicles a day through Macomb County. Its poor condition requires major reconstruction to replace the concrete between eastbound and westbound I-75 and I-94 beginning in spring 2018 and completed late 2018. The bridges over I-696 are in good to fair condition due to investments in rehabilitation and maintenance-type work over the years, and will receive additional maintenance work.
In addition, pavement and drainage repairs on EB and WB I-275 to I-75 will take place on nights and weekends.
This expedited $100 million project must be completed while funding is available and before the nearby I-75 modernization project begins. If delayed, it may be until 2024 before the work could be performed, and only if funding would be available.
EB 696 traffic will remain open from I-75 to I-94 at all times, while the WB lanes in this segment will be closed for the entire project. When EB lanes are reconstructed, EB traffic will be shifted onto the newly paved WB lanes. Full lane closures of one direction of the freeway will provide a safer work zone for construction crews and for drivers.
To provide a freeway-to-freeway detour, motorists can take WB 696 to WB 94 toward Detroit, to NB 76, and then to WB 696.
